How to control Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is basically a sleeping disorder. When a person breathing is disturbed during sleep, the person tends to have sleep apnea.  People who aren’t properly treated for sleep apnea tend to have breathing problems repeatedly. This means the bodies won’t get the required oxygen to breathe properly.

There are two types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): it is caused by a blockage usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep.
  • Central sleep apnea: central sleep apnea is usually caused because the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe properly.
Symptoms of sleep apnea:
  • Loud snoring problem
  • Stop breathing during sleep
  • Dry mouth when you wake up
  • Headaches at any time, usually morning
  • Insomnia
  • Hypersomnia
  • Inactive
  • Difficulty in concentration

Effects of sleep apnea:

If a patient having sleep apnea is not treated properly. He may face many health problems such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Irregularity in heartbeats
  • Minor heart attacks
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Headaches
  • Inactive

Obstructive sleep apnea:

Factors, which increase the risk of having OSA:
  • Overweight: when you gain excessive weight, the fat deposits around your airway that cause breathing problems.
  • Narrowed airway: you might have a narrow throat through tonsils or adenoids. These block your airway that causes breathing difficulty.
  • Smoking: smokers are more likely to have sleep apnea as compared to other human beings. Because smoking can increase inflammation and fluid retention that can block the airway.
  • Nasal congestion: if you already have the problem breathing through your nose because of what so ever reason. You are more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Alcohol: consuming alcohol can relax your throat muscles, which can worsen obstructive sleep apnea.

Central sleep apnea:

Risk factors:

  • Stroke: already had a stroke, this would increase your risks of having central sleep apnea.
  • Males: males tend to face central sleep apnea as compared to a woman.
  • Older aged: older people have more risks of having central sleep apnea.

Treatments for sleep apnea:

People find ways to treat illness. The same way people find ways to treat sleep apnea naturally. There are a number of measures that can be taken.

  • Healthy diet:
    take vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your diet. Along with a healthy diet, it is necessary to do exercise. Taking such measures help you maintain a healthy weight.
  • Say no to smoking: smoking blocks your upper airway, which causes severe breathing problems.
  • Avoiding alcohol: alcohol relaxes your throat muscles, which interferes with your airway and cause breathing difficulties.
  • Don’t sleep on your back: this may cause your tongue to fall back and cause interference with your airway. This may further lead to snoring and sleep apnea.
